Vote Scott Bolinger For City Council It’s that time again. Letts get out and vote A little bit about me: Ø I’ve been a business owner since 1998 and currently invest into rental property. I also conduct Field inspections, preservation work and teach fitness and nutrition and am an author of 4 books Ø I’ve served in both the Air Force and Army National Guards. Ø I have several years of college in the study of structural tech., fitness and nutrition, business management, motorcycle mechanics and information technology Ø I volunteered about 5 years as a planning commissioner for Alliance. I also did volunteer work and donated to the Red Cross, Disabled Veterans Association DAVA, YMCA, Nebraska Boys Ranch, and Keep Alliance Beautiful. Ø I have campaigned for office several times to help bring awareness to this area as well as the region of how we as a community can improve things. If I push an issue, it would be an issue I believe in and am actively participating in. Concerning Issues: Renewable and Cost Efficient Energy Sources: I do push a lot on renewable energy and cutting the cost of living expenses. Unlike many politicians that run for office, I actually actively use the products that I speak about. Some that I can’t afford, I do study them at great length so I can advise people that may not know about what they can do. If our government pushes renewable energy, they also need to be an active user of the product. Set the example for everyone to follow. After all, it’s our tax dollars that will pay the expenses of our government, or reduce tax if they eventually start using renewable energy, or elect someone like myself that will see to the change. There has been a push for this for at least 6 years and I have yet to see a change. Just higher and higher tax raises and electric and water rate increases. When I ran for the legislature, there were areas that Nebraska was behind by as much as 15 years compared to other states. Law Enforcement: One area I would like to see improve is our law enforcement. Expand a bit more on a specific self defense and de-escalation tactics. I’ve seen a lot of bully tactics lately. I’m sure our City Council, City Manager or Police Chief wouldn’t be hiring straight up bullies to help take care of the safety of our town. I’ve heard a great deal of complaints in this area and I know this needs some serious looking into. It’s innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. There should always be a verbal intervention or verbal de-escalations before any physical altercations. The complaints that I’ve been getting is a physical altercation with or without proper or probable cause. I’m not saying our law enforcement program is all bad. Our law enforcement does a lot of good work, but there is a couple bad apples. A specific de-escalating program and self defense program is one area I would start with. I’ve been pushing this issue for over 6 years. A tact II, or CPI style of training would greatly improve issues in this area. After a good friend of mine (a 16 year old kid), was shot and killed in Crawford a couple years ago by law enforcement. I went through out the region trying to get a training program implemented so this tragedy would not be repeated. Housing: I’ve been in the land lord business for around 10 years. The housing industry does need some improvements. At this time I’m working on developing a land lord association to help with different marketing strategies, keeping up to date with building codes, reviewing landlord and tenant laws as well as tax issues. Some of this organization may help expand contractor business. On the building codes, there’s nothing worse to a land owner then having an inspection out of the blue. Then having to put in 5 or 6 thousand dollars into a building and having a month to get everything fixed or closed because a code just happened to change. That’s a quick way to bankrupt a business. As a City Official, I would not want that to happen. If there are safety issues, then set goals on how to fix the issues without risk of causing someone to go bankrupt. Over the past several years, bankruptcies and foreclosures have increased a great deal and we don’t want to add to that. Our city employees and elected officials are there to help our area, not to destroy businesses. Landfill: My view on the landfill is if you are a residence of alliance, you shouldn’t have to pay extra to haul trash to the landfill. You are already paying for it in your utility bill, you shouldn’t have to pay again on every load of garbage you take there. When we are getting double billed like that, that’s when the city is taking advantage of our citizens. And that’s not very good business. We also apparently have a law that says nobody can take things out of the land fill. The question there should be, “ why the heck not?” That’s less garbage at the landfill and if someone can put that to good use, then that’s a good thing. But employees at the landfill should be salvage experts. If something is salvageable, then salvage it. Open Door Policy: In all of my business adventures, I’ve always had an open door policy. As a city council member this will continue on city issues. Being self employed I should be able to devote more time on city issues. I do believe in allowing people to speak their mind on issues so we’re able to make the best decisions we can. How ever, when I ran for the Legislature I campaigned all over the region, making several speeches at different events as well as city and county council meetings. A lot of good meetings, but there were some cases where I saw the city council would not listen to citizen complaints or they would shut them down halfway through a sentence. We as elected officials don’t do that, or shouldn’t do that in this case. We are here to help out our community and if we refuse to listen, it would be tough to keep up with problems that need fixed. When I ran for the legislature I spoke all over the region and there was only one city that refused to allow me to talk at there city council meeting about issues that concerned city and region issues. That was in my own town of Alliance. A lot of legislative issues are brought up by smaller entities. Such as city council, a non-profit organization, schools, or some organized groups that do the initial write up and take the issues to proper elected official. Whether it’s a city, county, or legislative issue, a good starting point should be the city. |
